The Armed Forces Service Medal (abbreviated AFSM; the AFSM does not carry a post-nominal) is a qualification award marking completion of the primary Saganami Island Academy (SIA) examinations. Originating as a Grayson Space Navy decoration, it is issued across all branches of The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc.. Under PD-SC-1007 Awards Policy it is a Tier 6 award and stands at position 76, the final ribbon in the order of precedence.
How to obtain
The AFSM is earned by completing the Basic Enlisted Course (SIA-RMN-0001 or SIA-RMMC-0001) together with the first Officer's Course (SIA-RMN-0101 or SIA-RMMC-0101) at the Saganami Island Academy. Upon completion of the officer examination, the Sixth Space Lord issues the medal automatically. It may be earned once per member.[3]
Recipients
The Armed Forces Service Medal is a qualification award, issued automatically on completion of the required examinations rather than by nomination. Accordingly, no curated roll of honour is maintained for it under PD-SC-1007 Awards Policy §14.
Cross-branch equivalents
The AFSM is a shared award, issued under the same name and design across all TRMN branches. It has no distinct per-branch equivalent.
History
Within the Honorverse, the Armed Forces Service Medal appears among the ribbons of the Grayson Space Navy.[4]
