An "A" School refers to a rate-specific training school or program. It is the first school that any enlisted must attend in order to progress within that specific specialty. Completion of said course may result in the title change of an enlisted member to denote their new area of expertise.
For example, successful completion of the Basic Damage Control Technician course will allow a Petty Officer Third Class to be referred to as a Damage Control Mate Third Class.
