HMS Roland was a Roland-class Destroyer of the Royal Manticoran Navy. Commissioned in 2012 as the first chapter raised within the Tenth Fleet, she served through two commissions and two fleets (the Tenth and later the Second Fleet) across nearly eight years before her decommissioning on 4 January 2020.
History
First commissioned on 23 May, 2012, Roland launched in Tenth Fleet under the command of LCDR Jack Yeager. [1] Under this crew, HMS Roland was the first hyper-capable ship commissioned in the Tenth Fleet, and was awarded the RMU along with the rest of TG91.1; she was assigned to said task group by Naval Directive 14JU-01 on 17 June, 2014[2] and subsequently as a part of Destroyer Division 231 within that formation[3]. While active, this chapter attended and participated in FresCon. This iteration was placed into the Active Reserve on 23 August, 2016, as the chapter upgraded to the Invictus-class Superdreadnought HMS Intractable [4].
HMS Roland recommissioned on 10 June 2017 in the Second Fleet under LCDR Jeffry M. Ellis, transferring HMLAC Caleb to the reserve fleet. She was decommissioned on 4 January 2020, her crew transferred to HMSS Greenwich.[5]
Legacy
Roland was the seed of several Tenth Fleet chapters across the San Francisco Bay Area and Central California. In January 2014 she launched Pinnace Roland-01 at San Francisco,[6] which was commissioned that April as the Nike-class Battlecruiser HMS Artemis, the pinnace returning to Roland for further use.[7] Artemis expanded in November 2015 into the Superdreadnought HMS Medusa under CDRE Michael Garcia, who had served as Artemis's founding bosun.[8] A Roland plankowner, Jack Kane,[1] likewise carried into the Saganami-C-class Heavy Cruiser HMS Wolf, commissioned at Ceres in May 2014,[9] whose command line under CAPTSG Sonja Thiede went on to raise the Superdreadnought HMS Thunderer and the amphibious transport HMS Guadalcanal.[10][11] The sublight Light Attack Craft HMLAC Grimalkin had commissioned three months earlier as the fleet's first chapter,[12] but as its first hyper-capable ship, and the seed from which a battlecruiser and a superdreadnought were raised, Roland was central to the Tenth Fleet's expansion across Northern and Central California.
