TenthFleet:Projects/Ships

Revision as of 22:48, 21 July 2026 by MDGarcia (talk | contribs) (Add Related projects: Orders (BuShips/Naval Directives linkage))

The Ships Project is an effort to bring every ship-chapter article on the Tenth Fleet Wiki to a complete, accurate, and properly cited state, written in an encyclopedic voice, with each hull's disposition – Active or Inactive – established from the directive record and reconciled against the organization's membership database.

Project lead: Michael Garcia (Lord McCovey Cove).

🚧 Under constructionThis page is actively being built and is not yet finished. Its layout, dependencies, or wording may be incomplete or change substantially. Newly created – created as part of a larger Project to expand pages in the Help and TenthFleet Namespaces. Guild Wars 2 Wiki's Template:TOCright page served as the original reference for this element. Completely original content appears above this banner. Outside reference source below this banner will be completely removed when this banner is removed. It should not be treated as a settled page until this banner is removed.

Goal

A page for every ship commissioned by BuShips directive, each one:

  • carrying a binary Active / Inactive disposition that is derived from a cited directive, never inferred from a roster's silence;
  • written in Wikipedia voice, letting the citation carry the sourcing rather than narrating the order;
  • with a complete commanding-officer succession, correct ranks and dates, current-crew lineage, and locally-linked ship classes.

Scope

All Royal Manticoran Navy hulls, plus allied-navy chapters – Grayson (  Grayson Space Navy/GNS), Andermani (IAN/SMS), and Havenite (RHN/RHNS) – each with its own rank set and holding stations. Space stations, LACs, and pinnaces follow their own conventions (pinnaces are documented on their parent ship's page; LACs get their own pages).

Method

Work proceeds one article at a time: search → read → reconcile → revise → verify.

  1. Search every namespace for the hull first – backlinks (which catch template-generated links), full-text search across all content namespaces, and the parent fleet page, whose command tables are often the only source for a ship's change-of-command dates.
  2. Read the body of every order, never just its subject line. A "Change of Command" subject is frequently an executive-officer or bosun change, not a new captain.
  3. Reconcile the full lifecycle – commissions, recommissions, every genuine change of command, fleet and task-group assignments, honors, and decommission – resolving conflicts against the order body, which is authoritative.
  4. Revise to the conventions below.
  5. Verify the rendered page (no citation errors, no leaked table markup, confirmed category membership) before moving on.

Conventions and rulings

Decisions adopted over the course of the project, recorded here so they are applied consistently:

  • Binary status only. The infobox status is Active or Inactive. Older values (Decommissioned, Active Reserve, Reserve, Scrapped) all collapse to Inactive. An inactive ship's co is Vacant; its final commander stays in the succession table.
  • Disposition must be cited. The last lifecycle event decides it – a decommission makes a ship Inactive, unless a later recommission overrides it. The absence of orders is not a disposition change: a ship is only "former" or "inactive" if a directive made it so.
  • The membership database is ground truth for what is currently active. Where a chapter reads as active on the wiki but is gone from the database, the ship was decommissioned and BuShips did not publish the directive to the forum. Mark it Inactive and tag the gap with {{Citation needed}} rather than inventing a source. This is a publishing failure in the record, not a judgment call.
  • Wikipedia voice. State the fact and attach the reference; do not narrate the order and then cite it. Remove self-referential phrasing ("under this crew", "this chapter", "said task group"). Use the officer's rank at the time of the event.
  • Crew lineage is the current crew only. It documents how the present crew reached this hull (pinnace → LAC → hull upgrades); crews are not combined. A decommissioned ship resets to a single placeholder line, with historical crews moved into the history.
  • Ship classes link locally ([[Nike-class]]), never off-site. Missing local class pages are acceptable redlinks.
  • Not a biographical site. Personal names are not wikilinked and no member biographies are created; peerage titles and place-names are linked.

Status

Measure Count
Ship-chapter pages in Category:Ships 196
Confirmed Inactive (Category:Inactive Chapters) 64
Reconciled Active against the membership database 53
Dormant hulls reclassified Inactive (unpublished decommissions) 35

Aggregate figures only; per-ship command and crew data live on the individual ship pages, sourced, and are not duplicated here.

  • Orders – the ship pages are sourced entirely from the order record maintained by the Orders project. BuShips Directives establish each hull's commissioning, changes of command, and decommissioning (its command history and Active/Inactive disposition); Naval Directives establish its fleet, task-group, and echelon assignments. Gaps or corrections found here – most often a decommission that was never published – feed back to the order record.

To do

  • Complete the encyclopedic-voice pass on the reclassified-Inactive hulls (leads still read present-tense on some).
  • Verify and clean the confirmed-Active pages against current membership data, one ship at a time.
  • Reconcile the aggregation pages (class pages, fleet order-of-battle sections) so they reflect the same dispositions.
  • Backfill fleet and task-group assignments from the Naval Directives board once the forum is reachable.
  • Create the missing echelon pages surfaced by the reconciliation (battle divisions, squadrons, task groups).
