HMS Devastation (DD-44)

HMS Devastation (DD-44) is a Havoc-class Destroyer currently assigned to the Home Fleet. One of the earliest vessels commissioned within TRMN, Devastation has been commissioned, stood down, and returned to service several times across her history.

History

Devastation was first commissioned on 11 July 2013 under the command of LCDR Michael Hunnicutt, as a Havoc-class Destroyer assigned to the Third Fleet, based in Smithfield, VA.[1] Command staff appointments followed in August and November 2013.[2][3]

On 28 May 2014 a change of command placed CDR Joseph Morgan in command.[4] Shortly afterward the crew stood up the new HMS Helen Zilwicki (CA-548) under Morgan's command, and Devastation was stood down.[5]

Devastation was recommissioned on 16 March 2015 under the command of LCDR Jacklyn Sullivan, remaining with the Third Fleet and based in Norfolk, VA.[6] A change of command on 4 April 2016 placed LCDR Andrew Martin in command.[7] The ship was decommissioned on 31 October 2016 and placed in the Reserve Fleet.[8]

After nearly four years in reserve, Devastation returned to service on 7 April 2020 under the command of CAPTSG Mark Polanis, assigned to the Third Fleet and based in Winston-Salem, NC.[9] She was re-commissioned again on 4 November 2020, this time assigned to the First Fleet and based in Warwick, RI.[10] Command-staff changes appointed a new Bosun in February 2022 and again in April 2024.[11][12]

Devastation was decommissioned a second time on 23 October 2024.[13] She was most recently re-commissioned on 1 April 2026 under the command of CDR Kenneth Ayotte, as a Havoc-class Destroyer assigned to the Home Fleet.[14]
