Major
Major (abbrev: MAJ) is an officer paygrade within the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps and the Royal Manticoran Army. It holds the equivalent military paygrade of O-4 within The Royal Manticoran Navy: The Official Honor Harrington Fan Association, Inc. (TRMN). A soldier or marine who has received their third pip is referred to as "major."
Honorverse
In peacetime, a major would have served three years as a Captain, between nine and eleven years in the service, and been reviewed by a Officer Promotion Board. Board review is more difficult, confirming only 80% of eligible candidates. They are considered to be field grade officers. [1]
Courtesy Address
By tradition aboard naval ships, marine officers with the rank of captain (O-3) are addressed as "major" since the ship's commanding officer is the only person addressed as "captain."
"Major Papadapolous, Ma'am," McKeon said, and stood aside as Captain Nikos Papadapolous, Royal Manticoran Marines, marched into Honor's briefing room. There could be only one "captain" aboard a ship of war, where any uncertainty over who someone was referring to in the midst of a critical situation could be fatal, so Papadapolous received the courtesy promotion to avoid that confusion.[2]
TRMN
If the soldier or marine has completed their -0104 Major Exam, and served as a Captain with 12 months Time in Grade, they are eligible to be promoted to this rank, but need to confirmed by an Officer Promotion Board. [3]
