HMS Thunderer (SD-323) is a Medusa-class Pod-laying Superdreadnought. After a period in the Active Reserve Fleet, she was recommissioned on 23 November 2024 and assigned to Second Fleet (the Gryphon Fleet). She is commanded by CAPTJG Jeff Alan Smith Sr.[1][2]

History

Thunderer was commissioned on 1 August 2016 by order of BuShips, under the command of CAPTJG Sonja Thiede.[3] After commissioning, she was immediately assigned to Task Group 91.1's command. Thunderer formed Battle Division 202 with HMS Revenge in September, as part of Battle Squadron 2.

She was transferred to the Active Reserve Fleet when the crew assumed command of HMS Guadalcanal on 13 November 2018.

Thunderer was recommissioned on 23 November 2024 by order of BuShips and assigned to Second (Gryphon) Fleet at Michigan City, Indiana, under the command of CAPTSG Sir Sherman Day, KSK.[1] Command passed to CAPTJG Jeff Alan Smith Sr. on 28 June 2025.[2]
